Overview

Speech-language therapy (SLT) is a treatment designed to improve communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing skills. It is facilitated by licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and helps individuals with speech delays, articulation issues, stuttering, autism-related communication barriers, or speech loss from neurological conditions like strokes.
Why Seek Therapy?
Speech therapy is highly tailored to the individual and helps improve a variety of conditions:
  • Articulation and Clarity: Correcting specific sounds, syllables, and word pronunciation.
  • Language Delay/Disorder: Building vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension.
  • Fluency: Treating conditions like stuttering or stammering by teaching controlled speech pacing.
  • Cognitive-Communication: Improving memory, problem-solving, and conversational social skills.
  • Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia): Helping individuals who have difficulty eating or drinking safely.
What to Expect
Sessions are usually play-based for children to keep them engaged, or highly structured for adults. The SLP will perform an initial comprehensive evaluation, then implement targeted exercises, modeling, and oral motor strengthening. Active parent or caregiver involvement is typically required so the exercises can be practiced in daily life environments.
